Strengths - being a large business Pentagram has offices around the world and covers pretty much every type of design that there is to do. they have a huge amount of highly talented designers at their disposal. They are good at promoting themselves and reach a huge number of clients.
Weaknesses - If you wanted a really personal brief made for your own private little business, then you would not work with pentagram as they are more like a design machine, taking in your problems and shooting out your solutions the other end, you would not get the personal approach that you could get from a smaller studio.
Opportunities - Pentagram can do anything for anyone, they have every opportunity they need, they have grown to such a scale that they a totally self reliant and would not need to bring other studios or resources as they will have them somewhere within their own business.
Threats - Studios like pentagram are quite are so big that they can sometimes steal work from smaller more unique businesses, pentagram is more of a corporation than a design studio.
2. Medium Design Studio - OTOTO
Strengths -They are a real concept driven studio, mainly working with 3D products, they create solutions to problems in the form of clever gadgets and physical objects rather than just doing print or digital design. They have some incredible work
Weaknesses - They are quite a specialised design studio so they would not be able to cover as many basis's as a studio such as Pentagram, I think you would be more likely to specifically come to OTOTO when you wanted a similar product created to what they have produced before.
Opportunities -They can apply the products they develop to other forms of graphic design, but they are made up of model makers and molding specialists so I don't think they need to do any otehr kind of graphic design.
Threats -
3. Small / freelance practitioner - Mr. Yen
Strengths freelance designer he has a very specific style of design, mostly working with paper manipulation, he has a unique skill which he utilizes to get the work and client. beautiful intricate patterns that you are surprised to find out were hand cut from paper.
Weaknesses - Having such a Unique style of design it is difficult to be versatile, because even though designs, concepts and clients are different, all of his work is obviously designed by the same person. which isn't necessarily always a positive.
Opportunities -He get''s a lot of work through word of mouth and past briefs he has worked on, as when you have such a unique and specific style as he does, you will always have someone wanting that style for whatever product they want producing, so I think work will always be there even though he is not as versatile as some designers.
Threats - possibly would be by past for a lot of work as he does not show any other forms of design, his tyle is spread over many different products and styles but if you wanted an illustrated or more corporate work produced then Mr. Yen may be by passed.
